New Laws Crack Down On Drunk Driving And Bus Rider Safety
Written By: Candice Cole

The law is named after Tiffany Heitkamp, who was killed in 2006 while riding on a boat with an intoxicated driver. The boat's driver already had prior DWI convictions, but was charged as a first offender because there was no link between the two offenses.
Additionally, lawmakers passed bills that would prevent registered sex offenders from becoming bus drivers and increase penalties for passing stopped school busses. Drivers convicted of passing a stopped school bus more than twice within 10 years will have their license suspended for 60 days.
