NY Offers License-Free Fishing
ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - New York officials are hoping to reel in some new anglers by offering a weekend of free fishing.
Department of Environmental Conservation Commissioner Joe Martens says people can fish without a license next weekend in any of the state's 7,500 lakes and ponds or 50,000 miles of rivers and streams.
The free fishing weekend is being touted as part of Gov. Andrew Cuomo's "NY's Open for Hunting and Fishing" initiative, which includes streamlining licensing, improving access for fishing, and expanding free fishing clinics.
The state's free fishing days started in 1991 to give everyone the chance to try the sport without buying a license.
