NY Senate Adds 63rd Seat
ALBANY (WENY)---The Court Of Appeals Approves a 63rd New York Senate Seat.
In a unanimous ruling, the state's highest court rejected a legal challenge brought by Senate Democrats claiming the Republican majority had violated the state Constitution by adding a senate seat.
Democrats fought the the additional seat, saying it didn't follow population formulas and it would give Republicans an unfair political advantage.
New districts for the Republican-led Senate and Democratic-controlled Assembly were drawn by the majority conferences earlier this year. Governor Cuomo signed them into law in March.
The new Senate seat will stretch from the Albany area and into the Catskills, including parts of Ulster County.
