Counties that Own Nursing Homes are Struggling
ROCHESTER, NY (WENY) -- Most county-owned nursing homes in New York state are not doing well financially.
A study by Rochester-based Center for Governmental Research found six counties have sold or closed their nursing homes in recent years. Counties that still run facilities often have a hard time balancing rising costs and stagnant tax revenues.
Thirty-three counties own nursing homes. As we've been reporting, Chemung County is looking to sell its nursing facility. Steuben County approved the sale of its nursing home to a private company last year.
