NEW YORK---[WENY]--- The U.S. Supreme Court Decision on the Defense of Marriage Act could mean a game changer for some New York Taxpayers. Governor Andrew Cuomo announced that Estate Tax refunds are now available to qualified spouses of same-sex couples.
New York became the largest state allow marriage equality in June 2011. This prompted the Tax Department to one month later define that, for New York estate tax purposes.
the Act now takes effect for the estates of people who died on or before July 24, 2011.
