Sen. Bob Casey Against PA Military Base Closures
WASHINGTON (AP) - U.S. Sen. Bob Casey is asking a Senate committee to forgo the process of looking at potential closures of military installations as part of Defense Department cutbacks.
The Senate Armed Services Committee is scheduled to take up the issue when it considers a defense funding bill. Casey, D-Pa., in a letter Thursday told committee leaders that the last round of closures proved more costly and less effective over time.
He also said the committee should first consider closing outdated bases overseas.
Military installations in the state include the Letterkenny Army Depot in south-central Pennsylvania and the Tobyhanna Army Depot in northeastern Pennsylvania.
The Philadelphia Navy shipyard and the Willow Grove Naval Air Station Base in suburban Philadelphia were lost in previous rounds of base closures.
