Twin Tiers (WENY) - During her time in Owego today, we spoke to Senator Gillibrand about the gun control debate in Washington following the tragedy in Newtown Connecticut. Gillibrand and her colleague Senator Chuck Schumer are asking for common sense solutions to gun control across the country. Gillibrand says criminals and people with mental illness shouldn't have access to guns. She also says 90 percent of guns used in new york crimes come from out of state, and 90 percent of those are illegal, meaning gun trafficking is a problem. Right now there is no federal law making gun trafficking illegal.
“There is also a lot of work that we can do in terms of access to military style weapons large numbers of rounds and really investing in mental health,” says Gillibrand. “Those are the kind of common sense solutions that most folks are for and can bring the nation around.”
Vice President Joe Biden is working with a bi-partisan group to come up with solutions, the results of that group should be announced by the end of the month.
