Property Owners May Have to Reapply for STAR

ALBANY (WENY) -- If you get a STAR property tax rebate in New York, you could have to re-register, if a new law is passed in Albany.
That's because of reports of widespread abuse and fraud of the $3 billion program. Officials say abuses and faulty filings cost the state $13 million last year and will cost an estimated $73 million by the end of 2016 unless changes were made.
In some cases, the tax break was illegally applied to second homes and rental properties that did not qualify.
