THON Breaks Records
Penn State charity dance marathon raises $13.3M.
February 24, 2014
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) - More than 700 Penn State students raised a record $13.3 million for a children's hospital by spending the weekend awake and dancing in a 46-hour marathon.
The annual THON fundraiser ended Sunday afternoon. It's now raised more than $114 million since 1977. Last year students raised almost $12.4 million, which was the previous record.
Officially called the Penn State Interfraternity Council/Panhellenic Dance Marathon, the event is billed as the largest student-run philanthropy in the world. Students dance - and remain upright - on the floor of the school's Bryce Jordan Center to raise money for the Penn State Hershey Children's Hospital.
