ELMIRA N.Y. (WENY) -- Back in January of 2016, WENY News took you inside the historic Werdenberg Building on Main and Water Street in Downtown Elmira. Renovation work has been ongoing since then and the building is starting to take shape.
Right now, frame work is in place and electrical and IT work is being done on the interior of the Werdenberg Building Project.
It's been 18 months since WENY News last checked in with owner Seth Adams [Envision Elmira], who says, that time has been filled with quite a lot of paperwork.
"We're working on our funding and financing. So we've finally got all the hurdles cleared with SHIPO, the national park service and we're finally under way.
Finally!," Adams exclaims.
Now with construction underway, it's more of a streamline process. Adams says they're hoping to get lights up and running by this Thanksgiving.
And if you just can't wait, well, they're already pre-leasing the apartments!
"Yes! We're taking applications for the four apartments that you see here - or that you will see here - on the second floor. And we're also interviewing a handful of commercial tenants that we are considering for the commercial spaces downstairs. There's nothing solidified yet at this point... Our main concern is the rollout of these apartments," Adams says.
Pricing has not been set as of yet, but there will be options as there are a variety of apartments being built.
"I think there's 2 about 1,000 sq. ft. apartments, a couple of 2-bedroom-one-bath, and a couple of one-bedroom-one-bath apartments....The smaller one's probably about 600 - 700 sq. ft." Adams explains.
While the building is coming together bit by bit, Adams is still seeking some additional help from the community to ensure the history and legacy of the building can truly be brought back to life.
"I definitely would like to put out a call to the community to anyone who has photographs inside or out of the building throughout the years, please if you
would, send them to Isabel Garcia at WENY, or post them on Envision Elmira on our website. They will be used as decorative items in the building," says Adams.
