South Carolina man convicted of rape in Steuben County

BATH, NY (WENY) - A South Carolina man has been convicted of raping a teen.

A Steuben County jury found 40-year-old Joseph Watkins, of Williston, South Carolina, guilty of 1st degree Criminal Sex Act, 1st degree Rape, and 3rd degree Incest. He was convicted of engaging in sexual acts with a 17-year-old in the Town of Bath in 2014. Watkins was a long-distance truck driver.

Watkins was taken to the Steuben County Jail after the verdict was read. He will stay there until his sentencing in September.

Watkins faces up to 25 years in prison on the charges.

New York state police investigators Brent Bernard and Jeremy Hagadone put together a case against him with assistance from Pennsylvania state police and the Internal Revenue Service.
