ELMIRA, N.Y. (WENY) -- The Clemens Center honored the hard work and dedication of their employees..

But for one employee, this night meant much more.

"Hazel Thompson is a big warm hug," said Clemens Center Executive Director, Karen Cromer. "She is so full of life and energy. She celebrated her one-hundredth birthday and we're very excited to have her as part of our team."

Hazel Thompson has been volunteering there for over thirty years.

"She's always full of smiles, positive energy," said Cromer. "She's usually here early and stays late. She walks over to the Clemens Center to do her job. She's very serious about it."

The center surprised Hazel with a plaque by the coat room where she worked for many years.

"I love people, and I just enjoy giving the hugs and also volunteering," said one-hundred-year-old volunteer, Hazel Thompson. "I got to the point where I couldn't do the coat room anymore, but I still give out the programs."

For Hazel, volunteering is just something she's done all of her life.

"I volunteered during World War II," said Thompson. "Volunteered and I still am very active in all the veterans organizations and also work at the food bank."

As for her secret to making it to one-hundred, it's pretty simple.

"My secret is keeping active, meeting people, loving people and helping as many people as I can," said Thompson.

Even at one-hundred years old, Hazel Thompson still touches the hearts of everyone she meets. One smile, and a hug, at a time.
