Elmira, NY (WENY) -- With The Excess Solid Waste Agreement approved Chemung County Officials ensure that the program is safe and will benefit the county.

A one-time addition of 150,000 tons of waste will be allocated to the 180,000 tons accepted annually through this agreement.
Officials say that the extra waste will not effect the county and that the landfill is prepared for the amount.

Tom Santulli, Chemung County Executive says "this is a one-time shot a good chance to pick up an extra 750 thousand dollars, it does nothing to our landfill still well below what is permitted for that landfill and believe me there is no leakage or risk or spilling out of anything at the landfill. Department of Environmental Conservation checks us all the time, we meet all the tests and ill say it for the last time, they tell us its one of the best landfills they work with in the State of New York."

Several studies have been conducted to ensure that the landfill is safe even with the addition of excess waste.

He also states "there has been a lot of time and research done to this. they have dug new wells around the landfill  which can tell you if there is any type of contamination leaks or whatever they really have done a first class operation we have had none, but they have done all this money and spent all this money to make that landfill a better place."

Officials also want to highlight the benefits of The Excess Solid Waste Agreement for the county as a whole.

Santulli says "on top of the money they give us on an annual basis to pick up another $750,000 for a purpose we can use in our county budget either to offset cost or to do something special with it, it's a great opportunity for taking garbage that is still far below what we are permitted to take."
