Chemung River Friends clean up tires

Posted: Updated:

ASHLAND, NY (WENY) - The Chemung River is a little cleaner today.

The Chemung River Friends and volunteers pulled tires from a portion of the river in Ashland. About a week ago, one of the volunteers noticed someone had thrown about a dozen tires over the bridge into the river.

Jim Pfiffer, Executive Director of Chemung River Friends, says they also removed about 120 pounds of litter and trash that had been thrown into or near the river.

“I think it will help make people aware that it’s not good for the environment. This creek feeds into the river and to our water supply and dumping trash like that doesn’t help anybody. I guess, I’d ask the public, if you see something suspicious, a truck at night pulling down a boat launch or up to a bridge, call 9-1-1 and take some action,” says Pfiffer.

The Chemung River Friends are always looking for more volunteers. You can find out more information about the group here.
