Horseheads School District Presents Diploma To Navy Veteran

Horseheads, N.Y. (WENY)-- Before Friday's veterans tribute parade at Center Street Elementary School,  the Horseheads School District honored a veteran who left high school before he graduated high school.

Seaman First Class Paul Vendetti was attending school in Elmira when he entered the Navy in 1944. Mr. Vendetti never received his diploma from high school, because he left before graduating. Friday morning, the Horseheads School District presented Mr. Vendetti with a high school diploma. He says he this was something he didn't expect to happen.

"I kept thinking way back when I was younger. It was like 67 years ago. I couldn't believe it really, it was one of those things that happened that I never thought of even happening before," says Vendetti. "I got a diploma and who knows, maybe I'll use it, maybe I won't. But I've got one, and I can always say I have one," Vendetti adds.

Paul Vendetti was honorably discharged from the Navy in 1946. Afterward, Mr. Vendetti worked at Woodlawn National Cemetery with other veterans for 40 years.
