CORNING, NY (WENY) -- People living in the City of Corning will soon have a new mayor.

With nearly a thousand votes more than his closest opponent, Democrat Bill Boland was elected to office. The unofficial results give boland 1,493 votes.

Republican candidate Nick Weinstein had 593 votes and Independent Elizabeth Whitehouse had 166 votes.

Boland, who currently serves the city as Deputy Mayor, says he's looking forward to entering into the new role.

"I'm overjoyed. I've loved this city since I was a little kid and it's absolutely a dream that I'll be the next mayor," Boland said Tuesday night.

Boland first announced his candidacy for Corning City Mayor in August of 2016. Some of the main issues he will be focusing on addressing as he enters office includes infrastructure improvement, expanding the tax base, and revitalizing neighborhoods.

Boland confirmed Republican candidate Nick Weinstein called him Tuesday night to congratulate him on the win.
