ELMIRA, NY (WENY) -- The Elmira chapter of the Salvation Army's Red Kettle Campaign officially began this past Friday. The chapter fell short of it's goal of $125,000 last year by about $8,000. They have set the same goal this year.
This year Major Craig Haggerty says they are off to an even slower start, "We're a little slow this year. We're down a significant amount, I'm not quite sure where we're at but we are down from the same time last year," he said.
After missing its goal last year, the chapter is attempting to do things a bit differently this time around, reaching out to volunteers on social media, as well as reaching out to local businesses. Haggerty says, "If some corporation or something would like to sponsor kettle and match what it makes in a day we'd really appreciate that. People can go online and sign up for an online bell ringer for their webpages and Facebook pages and things like that."
When the chapter isn't able to reach their goals, Major Haggerty says all of their operations are effected, "The first thing it affects of course is Christmas and we have to look where we can cut there...we end up cutting just about everywhere".
