Amazon Program Gives Back Portion of Purchases to Local Charities

Posted: Updated:

Elmira, N.Y. (WENY)-- An Amazon program is giving back a portion of every purchase to a local charity for those enrolled in their "Amazon Smile" program.

Once you sign up for "Amazon Smile",  you can choose what charity you would like to give to out of the charities that have registered. This can be changed at any time. Amazon will then give .5% of every purchase you make to that charity. The program works year-round and does not cost the consumer anything, as all of the money is donated by Amazon.

Darlene Ike, the Executive Director of the Meals on Wheels of Chemung County, says that they have already felt the impact of the program. She says, "We started with Amazon Smile probably a year and a half ago. We registered as a charity that could accept donations from them and we've gradually seen it increase. First it was a couple of dollars, then it was four dollars. The last one we got was fourteen dollars in our checking account. Now that doesn't seem like a lot, but fourteen dollars will buy almost three meals."

Arynn Brucie, the Engagement Manager at the Chemung County SPCA, says the money can go a long way. She says, "What we generate from that can go such a long way. It can help a shelter cat eat for a week. It can help us get supplies for our foster families."
