Elmira, N.Y. (WENY) -- After accepting nominations from across Chemung County, the Arctic League selected their Christmas tree today for its annual broadcast this Sunday. The broadcast is held to raise funds for their Christmas campaign.
This year, the winning tree came from Elmira and the home of Sophia Rhode. Rhode did not expect her tree to be chosen, but is thrilled it was. She says, "I think it's absolutely awesome. I was really, really surprised that they picked this tree. It is a pretty tree."
Tom Seem, a member of the board of directors for the Arctic League and also the Chairman of the Broadcast Committee, says this tree had just what they were looking for. He says, "Every year, we ask the community for volunteers, if you will, for donations for the Arctic League Christmas tree. We had several this year and we go out as a committee and look at them and we found this to be the perfect tree for this years Arctic League broadcast."
The tree was cut down and towed to the Clemens Center, where it will stay leading up to the telethon on Sunday.
Seem says the campaign is already off to a great start, and he is always grateful for the support the Arctic League receives. He says, "We're very happy with the way the campaign is going. I am continuously amazed by the amount of support that this community gives to a charity that is as old and beloved as this one is. It means so much to all of us who work on the charity, on the Arctic League. But it means so much to the community and those children who have a wonderful Christmas morning thanks to all the volunteering and the donations we get."
The Arctic League broadcast will air this Sunday, beginning at 10 AM on WENY ABC and the Twin Tiers CW.
