ELMIRA, N.Y. (WENY) -- A local business is on the verge of closing its doors due to what the owner claims as the struggling costs to stay open downtown.
The owner of Main Street Cafe says she recently discovered a tax debt they need to pay, putting the restaurant in a financial hole.
She says due to the quiet summer her restaurant has had, they'd be unable to pay the taxes, along with other day-to-day bills and fix up the business.
"Unfortunately, to be more realistic, if you even peak out our window, you'll see the foot traffic is very little to none," said Main Street Cafe owner, Angelina Guglielmo. "It takes a lot of inventive ways to get yourself in front of people. To let people know that we're here and remind them that we're here. It's been really rough. Like I said, we want to stay positive, but it has been rough."
A GoFundMe page has been created in an attempt to raise twenty-thousand dollars in donations to help keep her business afloat.
"We're asking our community and our political leaders to maybe reach out," said Guglielmo. "I know everyone says they want businesses in Elmira. So before I close mine I thought I'd give everyone the opportunity to keep us here."
She says if the restaurant is unable to raise the money by January, when the taxes are due, they'll most likely have to close their doors.
Guglielmo also says if she is unable to raise the money through their GoFundMe, she plans on returning all the donations.
