Elmira Salvation Army Receives Gold Coin Donation

Posted: Updated:

Elmira, N.Y. (WENY) - The Elmira Salvation Army received a gold coin donation today for their Red Kettle Campaign.

The coin is a gold maple leaf coin that weighs one-tenth of an ounce. It is worth between $150 and $200. It is for sale through the Salvation Army, and the proceeds will go to the Red Kettle Campaign. It was found in the kettle at the Jubilee in Horseheads.

Elmira Salvation Army Commanding Officer Dorie Haggerty says this donation goes a long way. She says, "It makes a world of difference. We have so many families in need. We're looking at about 800 families that we will be providing food and toys for Christmas day, and a coin like that just helps to promote the Salvation Army kettle effort."

The Elmira Salvation Army has also partnered with the Gold, Silver, and Diamond store in Elmira. If you need a new battery for your watch, you can go to the store and instead of paying the normal fee of five dollars, the battery will be free and you can donate that money or any amount to the Red Kettle Campaign.

The Red Kettle Campaign is currently 30% behind where it was last year at this time. The Campaign's goal is $125,000.

If you are interested in purchasing the coin, you can call the Elmira Salvation Army at (607) 732-0314.
