ELMIRA, N.Y. (WENY) - The Elmira Community came together today to celebrate the life a hometown hero, Ernie Davis.
Thursday would have been Davis' 78th birthday and the Ernie Davis Community Center held a party in his honor. They showed off his legacy and history with memorabilia around the party.
Organizers say he was a man of courage and dignity. They believe today's generation can learn from him.
"A lot of youth today are growing up without a lot of those values, and to see a young man of Ernie's age put forth those values, not only on a local level, but on a national level is something that we want to instill in the youth that comes to the community center," says John Ward, Youth Program Assistant at the Ernie Davis Community Center.
Davis grew up in Elmira and was the first African American to win the Heisman trophy.
