ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WENY) -- An Elmira man pleaded guilty to several child pornography charges in federal court on Thursday.

According to the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Western District of New York, 40-year-old Howard E. Brooks pleaded guilty to receipt, attempted distribution, and four counts of possession of child porn.

As WENY previously reported, he was arrested back in August of 2015 after the FBI searched his Lexington Avenue home in West Elmira. According to the U.S. Attorney's Office, Brooks told agents he tried flushing thumb drives down the toilet, knowing they contained child porn. The Chemung County Department of Public Works helped recover the drives.

The U.S. Attorney's Office says the drives were forensically analyzed and hundreds of child pornography videos were discovered. Several videos appeared to show children and toddlers being raped.

Before the 2015 search, Brooks was a high school history teacher for Elmira Christian Academy for less than a year.

Receipt and attempted distribution each carry a mandatory minimum sentence of 5-years each, with a maximum of 20-years. Each count of possession of child pornography is punishable up to 20-years in prison.

Sentencing is scheduled for May 8th, 2018.
