Elmira Man in Custody After Early Morning Standoff in Ithaca

Posted: Updated:

Ithaca, N.Y. (WENY)-- An Elmira man was taken into police custody in Ithaca after an hours-long standoff early Monday morning.

Just before 2:00am Monday morning, Ithaca police responded to a report of people arguing inside a house on the 100 block of Second Street in Ithaca. When officers arrived on scene, they observed a male subject, later identified as 43-year-old George Wilson, exit the house onto a roof. As more officers began to arrive, Wilson went back inside and barricaded himself inside the home. Officers determined Wilson had an order of protection against him, protecting a resident inside that house.

Officers cleared the scene as SWAT and CINT arrived on scene. Wilson made references to "Suicide by Cop" while communicating with police. The Negotiation Team's initial attempt to make contact with Wilson were unsuccessful, but after several hours, Wilson surrendered without further incident. Felony charges are pending against him.

The Ithaca Police Department was assisted by the Tompkins County Sheriff’s Office, Bangs Ambulance, Ithaca Fire Department, City of Ithaca DPW, New York State Police, and Tompkins County Mental Health.
