SAVONA, N.Y. (WENY) -- New York State Police in Bath say a tragedy was avoided, because of the swift actions from a neighbor in Savona on Tuesday afternoon.

According to NYSP, the Savona Fire Department was dispatched to a home filled with smoke on Main Street in the Village of Savona around 3:40PM. A nearby neighbor went into the home, and rescued two children from inside. The children, ages 2 and 6, were allegedly home alone.

After firefighters arrived on-scene and started operations, the mother of the children, 34-year-old Khristie J. Dearmitt arrived home.

An investigation revealed that food was left to cook on a stove burner.

Dearmitt was charged with two counts of endangering the welfare of a child. She was given an appearance ticket.

The Steuben County Child Protective Unit assisted in the investigation.
