Elmira, N.Y. (WENY) - People were lined up around the block this morning outside of the Arctic League headquarters, all waiting to help give kids in need in Chemung County a Merry Christmas.
The Arctic League has been in existence for over 100 years, and is Chemung County's oldest charity. The League raises money to help provide families with Christmas gifts, who otherwise wouldn't be able to buy them.
Volunteers from the community line up every year to give out gifts to the families.
The Arctic League opened their doors at around 5:30am, and got all of the gifts out in an astounding 28 minutes.
Tom Bruner, who is a member of the board of directors for the League, is always amazed at the effort from multiple generations of the community. He says, "Some of these people were here throughout the night, and you mentioned the children. That is just heartwarming, to watch other kids here helping other kids, it's just amazing. This community comes together at Christmas time and its just heartwarming, so if you haven't done it people, please take a time some time, next year, the year after, come down to the Arctic League and it will make your Christmas, I promise you."
