Overnight Fire on Harmon Street in Elmira

Posted: Updated:

Elmira, N.Y. (WENY)-- Multiple people are without a home after a fire broke out late Thursday night.

Elmira Fire crews were called to a home on Harmon Street between W. Hudson Street and W. Henry Street in Elmira shortly after 11 o'clock last night. Several streets in the area were closed to traffic as the crews worked to battle the fire. The strong winds and cold temperatures didn't make it easy on first responders. NYSEG, Southport Fire and Elmira Police assisted at the call

Initial scanner reports said 4 people were trapped in the house, but a short time later crews reported the people were able to make it out. When the fire first started, neighbors were told to leave their homes for fear of it spreading. Many of them waited things out in their cars to stay warm.

A cause of the fire is still under investigation. We'll continue to follow this story and bring you any updates as they become available.
