HORSEHEADS, N.Y. (WENY) -- Colder temperatures throughout the Twin Tiers are causing plumbing issues with residents.
If you have pipes in your home that aren't properly insulated, you could have a problem.
Colder temperatures could freeze, and even burst your pipes, causing expensive damage to your home and leaving you without water.
The best way to protect your pipes are to make sure they're not exposed to the cold, and that they're wrapped with heat tape or insulation.
"Broken pipes are expensive," said Horseheads Do-It Center Manager, Jeff Weaver. "It costs a lot of money to get them fixed. Plus the inconvenience of not having water. Sometimes it's not as simple as thawing out one little frozen part. A whole pipe will freeze up, then you've got issues."
Other ways you can protect your pipes are by blocking off any drafts or cold winds coming through walls, openings or skirtings.
If your pipes do freeze or burst, make sure you shut off your water valve and call a professional.
