In case you didn't know, it's been a pretty solid season for the Waverly Girl's basketball team. The Wolverines are a perfect 19 and oh, and currently sit 9th in the Class B state rankings. When it comes to why they're so successful this year? Well, over the years, they've gotten to know one another pretty well.
"This group has been playing together since third grade, so we have a lot of chemistry together, and we know how everyone plays," said senior Elle Nittinger.
"We've had the same group of girls for that long, and it's bittersweet in the end, but that's what's helped us most I think," said senior Marissa Trudeau.
The Wolverines are having one of their best seasons in recent history, but the team isn't necessarily concerned with the numbers. Instead, they're focusing on setting goals they feel will help them get to where they need to be come state and sectional tournament time. And the perfect record so far this season? Well....that's just an added bonus.
"You know, we have our mini goals within our season, and we just try to attain those and you know just keep going," said Head Coach Bob Kelly.
"We're pretty impressed with ourselves here, but our record's not everything If we hit our goals, that's why we're 18 and 0," said Trudeau.
The Wolverines have taken home the hardware and then some this season. They've won the Valley Christmas Tournament, The IAC South Large School title, and will vy for the division championship next week. And as win-or go home time draws closer....the team feels they have unlimited potential.
"You know, I think we can go as far as we wanted honestly, because we work together. As long as we support each other, we can go so far," said senior Zoe Mennig.
"They just have to believe in each other, they have to keep working and just take it one step at a time, and anything can happen," said Kelly.
