ELMIRA, N.Y. (WENY) -- Two Elmira men have been arrested after police say they were attempting to steal copper from a vacant apartment.

Elmira Police say 43-year-old William M. Ribble, and 35-year-old Thomas E. McGowan were both charged with burglary in the 2nd degree, a felony.

Police say around 2:10 p.m. Friday afternoon, officers responded to a home on West Third Street near College Ave. for a burglary report. Authorities say a neighbor called to report they heard the sound of glass breaking in the vacant downstairs apartment.

When police arrived on scene, they saw a broken window and a male inside. Officers were able to order this male and a second male out of the apartment where they were secured on scene during the investigation.

Police note, it appeared that Ribble and McGowan were trying to steal copper from the downstairs common basement utilized by more than one apartment.

The Elmira Police Department is thanking the public for being vigilant and reporting suspicious incidents.

The Elmira Police Department is asking any witnesses or anyone with information regarding this incident to contact the Elmira Police Department at (607)737-5626, or the tip line at (607)271-HALT.
