ELMIRA, N.Y. (WENY) - A report of a suspicious person has led to the arrest of a robbery suspect in Elmira.
Elmira Police responded to the report around 7:50am Sunday on Lincoln Street near Washington Avenue. According to the report, a suspicious man got out of a car, walked in between two houses and climbed over a fence. The caller provided a description of the suspect.
When they arrived at the scene, officers found the car and were able to follow the man's footprints in the snow. He was found near Welles Street and Johnson Street. Police say he was injured and bleeding when police found him.
Around the same time as the suspicious person call, officers responded to a home on McKinley Place near Stephens Place for a report of a home invasion robbery. The victim told police a man came into his home, threatened the residents with a knife and stole several items. Police say a fight took place and the suspect was injured. He ran from the home.
Officers say their investigation determined the man they found on Welles Street was responsible for the robbery on McKinley Place. They identified the suspect as 26-year-old Horseheads resident Michael Richer.
Richer has been charged with 1st degree Robbery. Police say the robbery was not a random act.
