ALBANY, N.Y. (WENY) -- Governor Andrew Cuomo announced a new initiative to help reduce energy consumption, and save taxpayer money.
On Monday, Cuomo announced the "Smart Street Lighting NY" program. The statewide effort calls for at least 500,000 street lights throughout New York to be converted to LED technology by the year 2025.
The program has the potential to reduce energy consumption across the state by 482 gigawatt hours annually. That's the equivalent of nearly 45,000 households which would save taxpayers about $87 million a year.
It would also drastically reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and improve the quality of light and safety of communities across the state.
