UPDATE: The Spencer-Van Etten school district Superintendent, Joseph Morgan, says the investigation into a school threat made on Wednesday has concluded. He claims the threat had no credibility and that students and staff were not in danger. You can read the statement issued by Morgan below:
Dear Spencer-Van Etten Community:
First, I want to thank the Tioga County Sherriff’s Office for their investigation into this matter. They were thorough, professional, and kept the School District apprised of their findings throughout the investigation. I also want to thank the New York State Police for their help in this matter. Lastly, I would like to thank the S-VE School Community for being patient in allowing law enforcement to complete their investigation.
The Tioga County Sherriff’s Office investigation concluded that the reported threat had no credibility and at no time were our students or staff in danger. Below is a summary of the findings of the investigation.
On Friday evening school district officials were made aware of an Instagram post shared on Facebook that claimed to have knowledge of a student planning to “shoot up the school”. The Sherriff’s Office investigation determined that this all started from an incident that happened in school on Wednesday. Students overheard other students having a conversation regarding a movie about a school shooting and the recent Florida shooting. When this conversation was shared with others outside the school, it resulted in the assumption that there was a threat to the school. Again, there was no credibility to this claim posted on social media and our students and staff were not in danger.
Please know that parents, students and families are critical sources of information for us in the school. The responsible thing to do is to report any concerns related to school safety to the school or law enforcement authorities.
As a district, we always work in partnership with law enforcement to continuously assess and evaluate our safety procedures. On Monday, we will have a police presence throughout our district. Counselors will be available all day for students.
Together We Achieve… a safe learning environment for all S-VE students and staff.
