NICHOLS, N.Y. (WENY) - State auditors say the Town of Nichols has been producing unrealistic budgets.
According to officials, those budgets continually overstate spending and underestimate revenues. The practice produced a $1 million increase in the town's fund balance between 2014 and 2016.
Auditors fault the town for not having a concrete plan on how to use the extra funds. They're recommending town official adopt budgets that include more realistic estimates for revenues and expenditures.
In his response, Town Supervisor Kevin Engelbert says the town has a history of taking a conservative approach to budgets.
