WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. (WENY) -- A public hearing on the opioid epidemic was held earlier this evening in Schuyler County.
Local Officials and residents gathered at the Legislative Chambers to discuss the matter and whether or not the problem should be deemed a public nuisance. People from the community were able to give their input on the situation and receive feedback as well. We spoke with Steven Getman, The Schuyler County Attorney on the matter.
He told us, "Schuyler county does not believe it should be forced, or its taxpayers should be forced to bear the burden of this. So, we're seeking compensation from these companies for that fraudulent marketing and deceptive activity. Hopefully we can bring that money back to the taxpayers and use some of that money to help fund the treatment and law enforcement activities that we are forced to deal with."
The opioid problem was agreed to be a public nuisance for the county.
