Finger Lakes National Forest Officials Announce Prescribed Burns
BURDETT, N.Y. (WENY) -- Finger Lakes National Forest Officials announced Friday, April 6th that they will soon be using prescribed fires in parts of the forest.
In the coming weeks, local fire departments will use prescribed fire to treat around 200 to 600 acres in the forest. The forest service says this will remove heavy amounts of grass and brush, reducing the risks for wildfires.
While the fires are not likely to impact local residents, they may see and smell smoke.
The timing of the burns depends on weather conditions, but should not go longer than six weeks.
If a burn can't be complete, the forest service says it will be postponed until this fall.
