SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WENY) -- Former NASCAR racer Tony Stewart has reached a confidential, out-of-court settlement with the family of 20-year-old Kevin Ward Jr., according to court filings.
A settlement was pending last week between Stewart and the family of the amateur racer that was killed in a 2014 race at the Canadaigua Motorsports Park, according to federal court records.
A settlement conference was scheduled for Thursday in Utica in order to give the parties a chance to put the settlement terms on the record.
However, today lawyers for both parties wrote that they have asked for the hearing to be canceled, writing that "they have executed a confidential settlement agreement for which no further action by this Court is required".
The parties' request was filed earlier today, but U.S. District Court Judge has yet to respond to the request.
