ELMIRA, N.Y. (WENY) – The Young Women's Christian Association, or YWCA, of Chemung County has adopted a new paid time off policy.
With this new policy, employees of the YWCA will receive the ability to take paid time off from work in order to get preventative cancer screenings.
According to the Cancer Services Program of The Southern Tier, operated by the Chemung County Health Department,, this policy can not only save lives, but also save money by reducing absenteeism and health care costs associated with cancer treatment.
Employees often don't receive what can be life-saving cancer screenings because testing sites are only open while they are working.
This policy adoption eliminates barriers for YWCA's 145 employees.
As of May 1, employees of the YWCA have four hours of paid time off each year to obtain physician recommended and routine breast, cervical, prostate or colorectal cancer screenings.
The Cancer Services Program of The Southern Tier operated by the Chemung County Health Department is working in the community to educate local businesses on the importance of paid time off policies for cancer screenings.
