BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) - A man from Ghana has been sentenced to two years in federal prison for an internet romance scheme that tricked victims out of money.
Jason Osei Bonsu was sentenced for conspiracy Friday in federal court in Buffalo. Prosecutors say the 36-year-old, along with co-defendants, lured victims through a dating website that targeted wealthy clients and gained their trust online and over the phone. Investigators say the defendants then asked victims to wire money to help with made-up business ventures or family emergencies.
One victim wired $65,000 in 2016 and $180,000 more a year later.
