PAINTED POST, N.Y. (WENY) -- Two dogs are now being cared for after they were abandoned outside of a Walmart Tuesday afternoon.
An investigation is underway. According to Walmart employees, the dogs were found tied up behind the store in Painted Post. Their crates were nearby, however they did not have food or water.
Tanner's P.A.W.S out of Corning was the first rescue organization to respond, after employees found the two.
"The female was missing patches of hair," says Christie Speciale, founder of Tanner's. "They were found pretty quickly and thanks to Walmart staff were given food, water and an air-conditioned room."
Dog control was also notified, and the two -- a male and female, were soon brought to a safe, undisclosed location. Upon closer investigation, those involved say one of the dogs may also be pregnant, or recently have given birth.
"If this female is pregnant, this person did not only dump two dogs," says Speciale. "They dumped several dogs."
Investigators with the Steuben County Sheriff's Office are looking to find out who may have left the dogs behind.
Rescue advocates are reminding residents what options they may have if they're unable to care for a pet.
"We understand circumstances arise and there are times when people can no longer care for their pet, but you're taking on a responsibility when you bring that pet into your home," says Speciale. "Really getting out there and being proactive and making all possible connections and contacts to try and rehome that pet is crucial."
We will continue to follow this story as an investigation continues.
Anyone who may recognize these dogs or have any information o the incident is asked to contact the Steuben County Sheriff's Office.
