ITHACA, N.Y. (WENY) – Firefighters responded to the Ithaca Bakery on Meadow Street this morning for a reported fire on the roof.
Tompkins County 911 took multiple calls around 8:30 in the morning for a transformer explosion and fire on the roof of the bakery.
When firefighters arrived, they found smoke and flames on the roof of the historic Ithaca eatery. Crews evacuated the building and worked to isolate the power.
The electric service cable feeding the building was burning and caught the roof deck on fire. There were also solar panels on the roof, which can be a hazard in a fire.
The panels were isolated and NYSEG was called to the scene.
Firefighters used a dry chemical powder to extinguish the roof fire and checked for extension to other parts of the building.
NYSEG secured the utilities and the building owners were contacting an electrical contractor to get the building back up and running.
The Ithaca Police Department and Bangs Ambulance stood by but no injuries were reported.
The entire event took about an hour, according to the City of Ithaca. Off-duty firefighters covered calls at Ithaca Central Fire Station while crews were operating at the bakery.
IFD and NYSEG are working to determine what caused the fire.
