VAN ETTEN, N.Y. (WENY) -- Community leaders from both the Village and the Town of Van Etten came together Monday night for a joint meeting to discuss the Village's dissolution process. The workshop was a chance for officials to start developing a face-to-face relationship, all to ensure essential services are transferred properly, efficiently and effectively.
The Town of Van Etten has already applied for a $50,000 state grant, which would cover 90% of the costs associated with the dissolution. Those items cover things like a feasibility study of the fire hydrants in the village, and the water treatment plant.
"For example, the village has a water treatment plant. The town has to create a water district, so that grant they applied for would create a map-plan report to continue that forward," says Ben Syden, VP of the consulting firm handling the dissolution, Laberge Group.
"The town has already begun its state process of creating a town budget. Normally towns begin it in September - they began a month early understanding there will be new budget lines, new revenues, new expenditures that have to take place, so they're being proactive in this process," Syden adds.
Additional workshop dates are set for September 27th, October 4th and October 25th. Earlier this year, community members in the Village of Van Etten approved the dissolution plan, setting the official process in motion.
The Village of Van Etten is scheduled to formally dissolve on December 31, 2018.
