ELMIRA, N.Y. (WENY) - Fire Departments across the country are seeing a significant decline in the number of men and women willing volunteer to help their neighbors in a time of need. The West Elmira Fire Department is one of them and is encouraging the public to apply.
The West Elmira Fire Department says they're always looking for volunteers and says there is a job for everyone in their department, including exterior and interior firefighters. According to West Elmira's Fire Marshall, Bob Young, he says they are looking for someone who is dedicated to their community and is willing to put in their free time to help others. In order to apply, you must stop into the West Elmira Fire Department and pick up an application. Once you are done filling out the application, there will be an interview process. The department says they will call you if they're interested.
All volunteers are required by New York State Law to go through 13 weeks of training and volunteer for at least two nights a week. The age requirement is 16.
