ELMIRA, N.Y. (WENY) -- Monday night, the Chemung County Legislature approved the authorization of four additional school resource officers for the elementary schools of the Elmira City School District.
The officers to be hired will strictly be stationed at the elementary schools alone, with the high schools and middle schools already in the hands of full time Chief Resource Officers. They will work to have positive interactions with younger students, and of course be prepared to protect a school if need be.
"We're please to do it. It's a nice interaction between our Sheriff's Department and the student throughout the school system. It's a good for the officers to embed themselves in the conversations going on in the school community, and obviously they are there in the event of there being any problems," says Mike Krusen, Deputy Executive for Chemung County.
The retired officers becoming the new SRO's will be hired as part-time employees, making things more affordable for the school district with a max salary of $30,000.
