SOUTHERN TIER, N.Y. (WENY) - Today is Primary Day for New York State, voters will decide on some of the "statewide choices" for Governor, Lieutenant Governor, and Attorney General.
Locally, voters will be deciding on who will represent them in Albany in the State Senate, Assembly and in the County Legislature. Watkins Glen International President and Horseheads resident, Michael Printup is going against incumbent Joseph Brennan for the primary race for the 4th legislative district in Chemung County. Printup and Brennan have traded barbs ahead of the primaries. In the Town of Van Etten, republicans Heather Gable and Thomas OConnor are also on the ballot today.
In Steuben County voters will have to decide on a County Judge. There are two name's on the ballot for the Republican, the Conservative and the Reform party. Voters will have the choice to vote on either Chauncey Watches or Mathew McCarthy. McCarthy is currently the Corning City Judge and Acting County and Family Court Judge. Watches has more than 30 years as a local attorney and 14 years as a judge. The candidate who wins will have a 10 year term on the bench as the Steuben County Judge.
In Tompkins County, voters will have to decide on a County Sheriff. The primary is between Ken Lansing and Derek Osborne. Lansing has already served as the county's top law enforcement officer for almost 8 years. Originally, Lansing said he was going to retire in 2018, however he changed his mind and has decided to run one more time. Lansing's contender Derek Osborne is no stranger to the Tompkins County Sheriff's Office, he is the retired under sheriff. Osborne retired in 2015. The winner in this primary will have several issues to tackle including, the jail population, community outreach, the opioid epidemic, and the overall goal of reducing crime across the county.
The polls open at noon today and close at 9 pm.
