Working Families Party reverses course, backs Cuomo

Posted: Updated:

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - New York's liberal Working Families Party was an early supporter of Cynthia Nixon's challenge to Gov. Andrew Cuomo but is now backing the incumbent it once criticized.

The party's leaders agreed to offer Cuomo its ballot line at a meeting Wednesday night.

Party leaders say they still have "real" disagreements with Cuomo but he's preferable to Republican candidate Marc Molinaro.

Cuomo has yet to accept the offer. If he does, his name will appear on the November ballot under the Democratic, Independence and Working Families lines.

Nixon ended her campaign after losing the Democratic primary to Cuomo. But Democrats worried her place on the ballot as the Working Families nominee would siphon votes away from the two-term governor.

Other candidates include independent Stephanie Miner and Green Party nominee Howie Hawkins.
