ELMIRA, N.Y. (WENY) - The Elmira Corning Regional Airport has started a brand new chapter.
After more than a year of nonstop hard work, the airport opened its new, state of the art terminal. New York State Lieutenant Governor, Kathy Hochul was one of the first elected leaders to tour the newly finished airport.
"Visitors are going to come here and they're going to have a wow factor. I've been to airports all over, this airport is stunning," says Kathy Hochul, Lieutenant Governor of New York State.
The transformation comes after New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo awarded the airport $40 million from the state back in September of 2016. The total price tag of the project sits at nearly $62 million, after money was also given by the government and local sources.
"This is part of Governor Cuomo's and I commitment, to ensure we undo the decades of neglect that was the status quo for upstate New York," says Hochul.
The airport features a larger terminal, more floor space, 300 additional parking spaces, outside courtyard, new food and beverage options, including a "Taste New York" kiosk and much more.
"This facility along with the infrastructure out there, the runways will make us the premier airport by far in the Southern Tier, it will grow this region," says Tom Santulli, Chemung County Executive.
