NY lawmakers to review ways to improve voting process

Posted: Updated:

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - New York lawmakers plan to take a closer look at ways to improve the state's burdensome voting rules, though any recommendations will be too late for this year's election.

The state's Assembly has announced a hearing this month intended to examine proposals to authorize advance voting and other changes intended to make it easier for people to vote.

New York regularly scores among the worst states for voter turnout. Experts point to onerous party affiliation rules that require voters to decide if they want to cast a ballot in a party primary many months before the election. They also note that many other states have moved to allow advance voting to make it easier for people to cast a ballot.

The Nov. 15 hearing will be held in Manhattan.
