UPDATE (4:15 p.m.) In a press release, the Elmira Police say the skeletal remains appear to be those of an adult, but it is currently unknown which sex.
An investigator from the Medical Examiner's Office is currently on scene assisting investigators as they wait for the forensic anthropologists.
It is expected that there will be police activity in the area for the next few hours.
UPDATE (3:05 p.m.) Officers on scene say they believe the individual possibly died in July of this year or sooner.
The coroner on scene and the New York State Police Forensic Investigative Unit is expected to do a 3D scan of the scene.
UPDATE (2:45 p.m.) According to Elmira Police, the investigation initially began around 11:30 this morning. Skeletal remains were found by a man walking his dog.
Officers on scene say they are currently putting the remains today, but as of right now, there are no signs of trauma.
A forensic anthropology team is en route to the scene.
UPDATE: Police on scene have confirmed to WENY News that human remains were found along the Lackawanna Rail Trail near Washington Avenue. They say the investigation is now currently a death investigation.

ELMIRA, N.Y. (WENY) -- Elmira City Police are investigating some sort of incident on the Lackawanna Rail Trail near Washington Avenue.
According to our reporter on scene, police are not yet releasing any information, but part of the wooded area near the trail has been roped off.
