WENY News - Elmira City Council workshops proposed 2019 budget

Elmira City Council workshops proposed 2019 budget

Posted: Updated:

ELMIRA, N.Y. (WENY) -- During Thursday afternoon's budget workshop, city officials went through a variety of topics from animal control, to building and grounds to city revenue. I spoke with Elmira City Manager, Mike Collins, who says the proposed budget should be good news to city residents.

"The proposed budget is a 0% tax increase for the city of Elmira for 2019 as well as no increase in the sanitation fee," said Collins.

Right now, the proposed budget sits around $32 million. In last year's budget, city residents experienced a 17% tax increase. But Collins doesn't anticipate that for 2019.

"Last year taxes increased by 17%," said Collins. "But my proposed budget has a zero percent tax increase. Now if changes are made by council, they would have the opportunity, in order to generate revenue, to certainly do a tax increase. But I do not anticipate council coming back and generating any percent for a tax increase."

After the workshops are over, Collins says the city council gets a chance to make any changes. The budget has to be approved by the first meeting in March of next year. If you'd like to check out the proposed budget, click here.
